Clinical Experience
All baccalaureate nursing programs are required to have clinical experiences through which students apply what they are learning. For this clinical experience, you will be identifying resources within your institution (hospital, clinic, home health) related to conducting research.
Does your institution have an institutional review board (IRB)?
If so, meet with the chair of the IRB and discuss the following points:
Who are the members of the IRB? Are any of the members nurses?
How are IRBs members trained for their roles?
How often does the IRB meet?
What types of research are frequently conducted in your institution?
How does the IRB follow up on on-going studies?
Where can a potential researcher find the forms and guidelines to submit a protocol to the IRB? A protocol is a description of the study that addresses specific requirements of protecting human subjects.
If not, is there someone in your institution who has conducted research?
Talk to that person about the IRB to which he or she submitted the protocol for approval?
Who were the members of the IRB? Are any of the members nurses?
How are IRBs members trained for their roles?
How often did the IRB meet?
Was your study similar to those the IRB typically reviews?
What requirements did the IRB have for on-going review?
Where did you find the forms and guidelines you needed to submit to the IRB?
Description of the Clinical Experience
Write a 2 to 3-page paper answering the questions you addressed in your meeting. You may use first person.
Begin the paper with a paragraph identifying the person, date, location, and time of the meeting. The rest of the paper will contain the answers to the questions you asked.
Finish the paper by summarizing what you have learned and how you plan to use this information going forward.

Your faculty mentor will grade the clinical assignment using the following criteria:
Clinical experience completed with appropriate person to meet the objectives of the assignment-20 points
All questions answered thoroughly- 60 points
Sentence structure, grammar, and spelling are correct-20 points
