Class, we are nearing the end of the course that contained a lot of information with regards to vocational rehabilitation and the counselors who are part of it. Some of you are in internships/practicum or are already in the field, so for this week, write about what you have learned from the material presented with the emphasis on ending session as well as how you might deal with the subject in your experiences. Use examples (do not disclose individuals’ names).
Discuss how you feel about ending treatment with your clients and express what might be your concerns about it. Use professional language, please — do not use colloquialisms such as “stuff,” “guys” and so forth. This should be written as if you were speaking with other professionals or teaching the subject.
Week 7 Mini-Lecture
Class, after you have completed the job placement and your client is working, the final stage that is needed to be completed is the “termination” phase. I am not one who likes this term and I use concluding or finishing up; however, the nomenclature of the profession utilizes termination (Rubin and Roessler, 2008), so we will go by that for this class.
For however long it took for you and the client to reach the point of securing employment for them, the two of you have formed a relationship, and for some, it has been a life-line. For others, it was a professional meeting and they can go forward without any issues. For those who need to have that life-line, so to speak, still there one of the ways to be sure that the conclusion of the sessions are not traumatic, one of which is to prepare ahead of time for when the sessions will cease. One aspect that you learned from your textbook (Rubin and Roessler, 2008) is to address the subject during the beginning such as with the first meeting or during assessment.
Another way is to begin to prepare during the sessions where the employment picture looks as it will be successful. In any case, termination is a time to allow the client to present their feelings about the new journey they will be embarking on as well as how they might feel with leaving the weekly sessions. One way to is be sure to let the client know that they can come back when they need to and see a professional who will help them even if it might not be you (Rubin et al., 2016).
It is necessary to remember in all cases where counseling is ongoing that there might be emotional responses to the ending of the treatment whether vocational or not. These times need to be about the individual client and not a one-size-fits-all type of practice. However, that being said, clients need to move forward and the counselor/s are equipped (or should be) with the necessary tools that are needed to allow the aforementioned to occur (Evans et al., 2020).
