Choose only one of the topics below, and write a 6-10 page paper thoroughly covering the subject matter. Papers are to be typed in a 12 point standard font (Times New Roman or Arial), double-spaced, with one inch margins and page numbers. No title pages or bibliographies/works cited are necessary. Submit the paper using the link provided under our Week 13 module. Papers are due, at the very latest, by the Sunday night of Week 13. No later papers are accepted. When writing, you must support your own ideas by citing short passages from the primary source documents in The American Yawp Reader (Volume I: before 1877). Do not confuse the secondary source textbook with the primary source reader. The textbook is categorically not allowed in this paper. Please also note that the primary source passages you do quote from the reader are not too long (a sentence or two at the most is generally adequate), as they’re being used to support your argument, not make it for you. Be sure to then place the borrowed text inside quotation marks (showing the reader you are not using your own words), and place the chapter number, document number, and document title in parentheses at the end of the sentence. For example, if you were discussing the Native American’s reaction to their forced removal from their ancestral lands, you would cite a passage from the primary source in the following manner:
In the hopes of making their removal official, American leaders in Washington struck a deal and signed papers with a number of Cherokee. However, these Cherokee were no by means leaders invested with diplomatic powers. The actual Cherokee leaders wrote, “This instrument, the delegation aver before the civilized world, and in the presence of Almighty God, is fraudulent, false upon its face, made by unauthorized individuals, without the sanction, and against the wishes of the great body of the Cherokee people.” (12.1 Cherokee Petition Protesting Removal, 1836)
I repeat, please be sure that your quotes are just supporting your own argument, not making it for you. Be sure to first contextualize, and then explain your quotes’ relevance to your own ideas.
No secondary sources of any kind (not even the introductions to and overview of the primary sources) should be quoted and cited. If you are uncertain about what exactly constitutes a “primary source,” please consult the links on our class’s homepage under the module “Course Materials”. Do not quote and cite the textbook, or information you noted in lecture. You may draw upon what you have learned in lecture, from the videos or textbook as background material, but the information you use from them must be put in your own words. The use of any sources other than the primary sources from The American Yawp ReaderLinks to an external site. (Volume I: before 1877) is not permitted (this is explicitly not a research paper, but an exercise in primary source analysis). However, be sure you are always writing in your own words, and not stealing the words of others. That is plagiarism. If you are caught plagiarizing, you will not only receive an “F” for the paper, but you will also be subject to disciplinary action by the Dean’s office. Additionally, as stated in the syllabus, if you have taken this class before, you must still submit entirely new work for this assignment. You may not recycle old work. Finally, as also stated in the syllabus, the use of any AI in this class (including writing tools such as Grammarly) is expressly forbidden. Should any AI be detected, students will either receive a zero for the assignment, or a significant deduction. There will be simply no time to accept rewrites.
Topic
Discuss the impact slavery had on early American history. Among other things, consider its origins, how it affected various regions, as well its personal, political, economic, and social implications. Please note, you may have to read ahead a bit to obtain information we’ve yet to discuss. In your paper, include relevant primary source quotes and their corresponding citations from at least four different readings in The American Yawp ReaderLinks to an external site. (Volume I: before 1877).
