Directions: Choose one topic and prepare a 3-5 page essay that uses any three stories we’ve read in class this semester (including the one you chose on your own). No more than one fairy tale can be used. (NOTE: Do not paste in parts of your previous essay or posts, though obviously there could be a little overlap in the themes discussed–expanding on your earlier ideas is fine). Upload it here by 1/12 at 8pm. Grades are due 1/13 from me so nothing can be accepted after this time.
1. Most of the works we’ve read this semester deal with the narrator or main character discovering or refining his or her identity. It isn’t always a simple matter, though; the qualities a character discovers within are not necessarily admirable. Discuss this concept in relation to any three works we’ve read this term.
2. Another prominent theme in children’s lit is the quest or journey (which may involve magic). Discuss three different quests undertaken by characters in any three stories we’ve read.
3. Sometimes it takes an animal or a mysterious being (such as a Lilliputian) to teach a reader (or a character) something important about being human. Discuss this concept in any three works we’ve read this semester.
4. Parents and children, and the relationships between them (or lack thereof) form a significant part of each story we’ve read. With attention to any three stories we’ve read this term, discuss this concept.
