If you are doing the first option, with Sammy & Connie, when citing in the essay use (Updike) or (Oates). Just the author’s last name will suffice. for the second option, you will have to use the author’s last name plus the title of the story in quotation marks. For example: (Chopin, “The Storm”), (Chopin, “The Story of an Hour”), (Faulkner, “Barn Burning”), and (Faulkner, “A Rose for Miss Emily). This is how you would cite a quote from a story: ‘”I said I quit,'” (Updike). Or, “‘He was brave’, he croied suddenly,” (Faulkner, “Barn Burning).
