Choose one of the major minority groups in the US to focus your analysis: women, Black Americans, Latin and Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, Americans with Disabilities, and the LGBTQ+ community
Next, return to Chapter 4 & 5 and find a major event, course case, bill / law, or other form of political action or interest group that impacted the chosen minority community, e.g. Civil Rights Act of 1964, equal rights amendment (ERA), The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), 1973 Rehabilitation Act.
Research and find a journal article, a news story, information from an interest group, information from an informative or government website, or any other credible source that discusses your chosen political action/ event/ interest group. The library or Google Scholar are good places to search for this information.
Draft your forum response:
Overview the minority group, the political action/ event/ interest group as indicated in the textbook (including page numbers), and what you found out about in your additional research.
In the overview of your research, you should also indicate what kind of article you found (interest group website, scholarly article, news story, etc.), spend a moment reflecting on how this source specifically seeks to inform the public on this political action/ event/ interest group.
Include a complete citation for this article in APA format.
Next, identify which major branch of the US government is primarily implicated in your research and why. Indicate how this reflects what you’ve learned about the branches of government so far. You should pull at least one direct quote from the textbook, with page numbers, here.
Finally, reflect on what you learned and what you think this says about the history of Civil Rights and their relationship to the American Government.
Original response should be at least 200 words.
Review the work done by your peers. Identify at least two posts that correspond in some way to the work that you have done, whether that is by minority group, similar event or law, the same branch of government, or a similar thought process on the reflection of the relationship between Civil Rights and the American Government. We will have discussion time in class next week to extend the analysis, discussion, and reflection of the complicated history of civil rights in the US.
Note: The work done in this assignment is the foundation for your Reflective Essay on Civil Rights and the American Government. Anything that you write in your forum responses can be copy and pasted over and used in your essay. Therefore, writing a strong forum post and participating in class discussion in an informed and academic way will help you get started on your essay.
