Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to assess student’s individual critical thinking,
writing, information literacy, and technological competency. The assignment must be a student’s
independent, individual work. As such, students are required to work on the assignment
independently, from formulating a topic to writing a conclusion. The instructor will not provide
topics to students for this assignment. Students may seek assistance from MC Writing Center,
Academic Success Center, and MC tutors while working on their assignment; no other
collaboration or assistance are allowed.
Instructions:
1. Select any theory or concept in the required textbook for this course that you would like to
explore more in depth (look through the required textbook’s content to identify a theory or a
concept of your interest). Write an introduction explaining your choice of the theory or concept
(e.g., why did you choose this particular theory, as opposed to other theories).
2. Explain the theory or concept as you understand it (describe its key points in your own words).
Theory is a well-established consensus explanation for a problem or a fact that has been
repeatedly confirmed by previous research (see Chapter 1 for a more detailed definition of
scientific theories).
3. Go to the MC Library website to search for a peer-reviewed empirical research article on the
theory or concept that you selected. Read the article to learn more about how the theory or
concept was empirically tested by researchers (if you want to use more than one peer-reviewed
article, feel free to do so, however, you will not get an extra credit or points for it). Briefly
describe how the article you selected is relevant to your paper.
4. Formulate a research question and a hypothesis that you would use to study the theory you
selected. Do not reuse the research questions or hypotheses from the textbook or the peerreviewed article, or any other sources of information. Your research question and hypothesis
must be written in your own words. A research question is a question that you are interested in
studying. A hypothesis is your educated guess that aims to predict the answer to the research
question.
