Choose a published quantitative nursing research article in which the researchers conducted an original research study (NOT a review article, literature review, systematic review, meta-analysis, or case study). You may not use any articles presented in the textbook as example critiques or an article that has been used in previous courses. The selection criteria for the critique article include peer-reviewed quantitative research article (experimental, quasi experimental, correlational, or descriptive study), the first author should be a nurse, and published in a nursing journal within last five years.
2. Critique each component of the research article in a clear, concise, and objective manner to identify the study’s strengths and weaknesses. Follow the guidelines introduced throughout your text. Chapter 12 discusses the entire critique process, and the textbook also provides examples of critiques/appraisals. Address the significant areas of the research article to include the following:
Title & Abstract
Problem & Purpose
Literature Review
Conceptual Framework
Methods
Results
Discussion
Clinical Relevance
Note that simply summarizing the articles is NOT critiquing or appraising. Please use Chapter 12 critical appraisal guides as a framework to complete this paper. You don’t have to address every item in the guides, and many of the items may be irrelevant to your articles or redundant.
3. The appraisal paper should be 10-12 pages (including title page, abstract, and reference pages) in length and follow APA format. It is essential to cite correctly words and ideas of others in the text of your paper to prevent plagiarizing.
4. In addition to the guidelines for written assignments (posted in course content), follow the critical elements for writing:
Demonstrate components of critical thinking as evidenced by text that is clear, accurate, and relevant.
Conform to principles of English language including correct structure, grammar, syntax, and spelling.
Use terminology consistent with the nursing profession.
5. Each student must submit a paper to the course dropbox prior to the deadline which will automatically submit it to Turnitin. You must allow time to revise your paper based on the Similarity Report which should be in the green area of similarity. If not, the areas of the paper that are too similar should be rewritten and resubmitted. Do not wait to do this at the last minute.
6. Submit your paper and a readable copy of the research articles to the assignment folder (the paper CANNOT be graded without the article). All assignments must be submitted on time. Late assignments will be reflected in the deductions of 10 points per day from the initial grade.
