Child Study Framework
ECE 301
Please use the following framework when writing your final Child study. My thinking is that the entire study will be about 8-10 pages.
▪ Introduction/Background of Child
Here you write about why you chose this child, and any background information you think is relevant for the reader in “understanding” your child. Discuss the child’s familial structure, the child’s linguistic/cultural background, and any special services he/she is receiving. If the child is receiving “early intervention”, is there a Family Service Plan? What are its recommendations? Are there any health issues that may impede development?
▪ Physical Presence and Gesture (Comment on the fine and gross motoric developmental needs of the child.)How does the child approach their physical needs?
▪ Disposition and Temperament (Comment on the socio-emotional development of the child.)
▪ Connections with Other People (Observe the child in their different contexts: home with family, school, playground, community activities; are there differences in the behavior along the various contexts?
▪ Modes of Thinking and Learning (Identify children’s developmental strengths: their culture, language, family, community. How do these variables influence their diverse style of learning/thinking? How is their “style of learning” related to the various contexts and to developmental theory discussed in class.(Think The Whole Child)
▪ Summative Thoughts
Here you write about your interpretations (your take) on the child you’ve been working with. Why do you think he/she does what he/she does? What would you recommend as follow-up and for instruction of him/her? What are your recommendations for the planning of Developmentally Appropriate activities? How do your activities build on children’s strengths? Cultural and linguistic diversity, familial relationships. To what degree have you involved the child’s family and community?
