Chapter 31: Genderlects – Movie Paper # 2
Movie to watch: Silver Lining Playbook
II. Analysis Instructions (5 step approach)
1)   Copy all questions you choose to answer from the movie handout chapter questions. which are at the end of this guide, onto the paper you are handing in. Including secondary questions such as what impact this interaction had on characters in the film?
2)    Define all terms from the textbook ONLY. Must use the definitions of terms and concepts found in each chapter.
Each definition should be AT LEAST 3-5 sentences.
3)   Choose a scene or scenes from the movie that connect or illustrates the terms definition. In short, match the definition with a scene from the movie.
4)   Once steps 1 – 3 are completed, you begin your analysis.
a) Your analysis is based upon the ability to APPLY THE WORDS FROM EACH TERM’S DEFINITION to the scene you have chosen. So, if you define the term “stereotyping” for example. You study closely the words from the definition and their meaning.
b)) Then look for a scene where characters are behaving and speaking in a stereotypical fashion. Where exactly in that scene does stereotyping occur, ask yourself?
c) Once you do this, you explain or analyze this interaction by using specific words from the definition of stereotyping to better understand the character’s communication behavior. You may have to study closely the dialogue, and nonverbal communication of characters to use as evidence in support of your ultimate analysis.
d) Additionally, it is vital you answer the secondary questions such what impact this scene had on the characters. It is in these secondary questions and analysis that your overall interpretation of group behavior will be deeper and more meaningful, since you now have a foundation of what is happening communicatively,
5)   To check if you are doing the analysis correctly, review what you have written. If your explanation or analysis of a scene is based on opinion, inferences and the like, or worse just citing a scene, with no use or application of the words from a definition, you need to go back to the analysis and revise it.
You can also check your analysis with the movie rubric (next page) to see if you are meeting the assignment’s criteria for an A grade.
If you give such a personal, generalized analysis of scenes or interactions you will not receive full credit or any credit at all depending on what you say.
