Case Study Paper Assignment Instructions
Overview
The importance of the Case Study Paper Assignment is to show an understanding of the Seigel and Bryson text, The Whole Brain Child, and how to make it practical and implement with children. It is important to understand brain integration on all levels, including techniques that can help children work through trauma, and pain or understand the moldability of the brain. The writing of this paper will allow you to reflect on the text, digest the information presented, and use the practicality of the text in terms of working with a child. This will be a skill very important to learn, as you continue to read professional books and relate them to your academic experience and career for further knowledge and experience in practical situations.
Instructions
Read the case study presented below and write a paper (2 pages of content) on how you would practically help the child in the case, using the concepts of brain integration and development based on our text. Use 3 different techniques discussed in the Seigel and Bryson book, The Whole-Brain Child, citing the book and explaining the practical implementation of these techniques and ideas from the perspective of what the parent could have done or taken into account, OR explaining to and taught the parent how to handle this situation differently in the future.
This is a personal reflection; therefore, first-person writing (the use of “I”) is acceptable. However, you must include at least 3–4 citations within the paper to support the ideas that you have learned from the Siegel & Bryson textbook (concepts may include left brain/ right brain, upstairs/ downstairs brain, Memory Integration, Connect, and Redirect, Move it or Lose it, Engage Don’t Enrage, Name It to Tame It, River of Well Being, Me-We connection, etc.). These concepts should come directly from the Seigel and Bryson book, in the form of a paraphrase (note: no direct quotes).
Include the following in the Case Study Paper Assignment:
1. Include a title page in proper current APA format.
2. Write the Case Study Paper Assignment as outlined above with 3–4 citations included.
3. Provide a reference page with the Siegel & Bryson textbook as the source.
Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.
Case Study:
Claire is a 6-year-old girl who is shopping with her mother. Upon entering the checkout line, Claire notices a wonderful shiny lollipop that she cannot live without. Claire politely asks her mother if she can have the lollipop before they check out. Claire’s mother exclaims, “No, not today honey.” in a kind, but firm tone. Claire, who often cannot handle hearing “no”, begins to beg her mother, “Mommy, PLEASE, just today! I really want it! It sounds so good!”. Her mother continues to tell her that her answer is “NO”. Claire begins to scream louder, “You gave me one last time we were here! And now you WON’T…. You are so unfair!” Her breathing becomes labored and she begins to hyperventilate, as her mother looks very nervous and embarrassed. Her mother tells her firmly that she needs to be quieter, as other people around them are noticing the commotion. Claire continues to become louder and more upset yelling and screaming about how it is so unfair that she cannot get something fun at the grocery store. Claire’s mother begins to raise her voice at Claire, telling her to “STOP, be quiet and CALM DOWN!”. Claire escalates more as her mother escorts her out of the store and into the car to avoid stares and looks from fellow customers.
