Carefully read and comprehend the case you select. You are the worker in this case. You will need to further the assessment of the client in order to set goals and SMART objectives for intervention. This assignment will also require you to form recommendations for future agency programs, policies, protocols, and/or practices. It is expected that students will research issues presented in the case to further assessment, intervention, and to form future recommendations. The student will prepare a paper not to exceed 12 pages in length. The paper should include a minimum of eight scholarly references. You may use the headings from the outline below to structure your paper. Include a title page, introduction and conclusion paragraphs, and a reference list. An abstract is not required. Students should use caution in making assumptions pertaining to the case they select. Inferences are based on professional skill, knowledge, ability, or factual information and are okay to include in the paper.
Students are encouraged to consider all the intersectional variables/factors in the case when responding to the prompts.
Provide a case synopsis that includes demographic information and an introduction/summary of the case highlighting key facts. Be sure to clearly define the problem according to the client’s perception. The synopsis should be concise, clear, and to the point.
Client Assessment: Based on the case information and your knowledge of IPV, address the following:
Identify general clinician practice approaches and skills to explain how you might validate the client’s experiences and feelings.
Identify IPV risks and red flags, including any specific power and control tactics related to the case.
Identify strengths, capabilities, and capacities the client possesses.
Provide a thorough discussion about the barriers and complexities (i.e., values, dilemmas) that hinder the client from leaving the IPV situation.
Specific to the case, discuss the potential impact of IPV as it relates to a person in the environment. Address each of the following systems:
Micro-system: individuals and their immediate family members
Mezzo/Exo-system: connections or interactions with small- to medium-sized community organizations or groups (i.e., school, neighborhood, extended family, co-workers)
Macro-system: large institutions that impact communities, states, or countries (e.g., policy, legislation, healthcare systems, chronosystem or historical impacts, ethical frameworks, international associations)
Briefly address other ways in which you would further the initial assessment.
Client Intervention: Based on the case information and your knowledge of IPV, address the following:
Identify the essential elements that would go into a safety plan for the client based on the case information and your assessment.
Develop and prioritize three goals with supporting SMART objectives for each goal based on your knowledge and the client’s perception of their situation. And identify potential obstacles that the client may face in achieving each goal. See the example below.
Identify and discuss three potential sources of support, community services, and/or appropriate referrals for the client.
If the person using abusive behaviors were a client, what might be some appropriate sources of support and referral for them?
Agency Program and Policy Recommendations: Based on the case information, what agency programs, policies, protocols, and/or practices might you recommend for this agency? Articulate your reasons for each recommendation.
Example of a goal with supporting SMART objectives and barriers to achieving the goal.
Goal 1: Sam will increase their ability to articulate anger in healthy ways.
Objective 1: Sam will practice a new calming technique (self-relaxation, thought stopping, creative visualization, timeouts, progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing, stress management, etc.) daily, over the next week, starting tomorrow, when experiencing feelings or thoughts associated with anger.
Objective 2: Sam will keep a daily log for the next week, starting tomorrow, that identifies any cues or specific triggers and emotions and thoughts associated with anger. The log will identify calming techniques attempted/used and how Sam feels after practicing the technique.
Barriers to achieving the first goal include Sam forgetting to document on the log daily due to their busy work schedule. It is also possible that Sam will become reluctant to try new techniques due to time constraints or experiencing fatigue after long work hours. Sam may not feel comfortable practicing a certain technique and will stop practicing it too soon without giving ample opportunity to become comfortable with it.
