Week 8 Assignment: Case Study Assignment
This assignment is due by Sunday of Week 8 at 11:55 pm ET
You have been invited to be an expert guest lecturer at a local university in a disaster psychology class. Your job is to give a presentation based on a disaster from the last 20 years. Your lecture needs to include consideration of the following factors: the scope of the disaster, community impact, psychological and health risks to first responders, psychological assessment, impact on psychological functioning of first responders and civilian victims, and the need for community outreach.
Include the following components in your presentation:
1). Select a different format than you did for the Week 4 presentation assignment. Create an Adobe Sparks, Smore Newsletter, PowerPoint, Concept Map or Word Document include your name, class title, name of the assignment & date at the beginning of the assignment.
2). Identify and present a disaster that occurred in the past 20 years. As part of this discussion, include how relevant media sources and political events influenced the response to this disaster. NOTE: You may reference the 9/11 case study provided as part of the course materials as a guide, but you cannot copy information directly from this article.
3). Discuss the impact of the disaster on the community/civilian victims and identify the psychological and health risks to first responders. Key components must be given for this specific disaster.
4). Explain how you would assess for trauma-induced psychiatric disorders in first responders following this disaster. What factors might challenge this process?
5). Identify how community resources were strong and areas in which they were lacking following the disaster. What suggestions for community outreach efforts would you make?
6). Add at least 4 pictures (illustrations/charts/graphics or videos) and give a caption to indicate which requirement relates to that picture.
7). Add at least 4 scholarly references in APA (7th Edition) format.
The APUS Writing Center at Writing@APUS and APUS Library both offer a wealth of information for writing and APA formatting.
