Directions:
We made it to the end of the course! We have one final assignment to complete to be done with our class. Since we haven’t been taking tests or exams, this last writing assignment is an essay about what you’ve learned this semester and outlining your remaining questions about developing a strong writing habit. Research shows that when we pause to take stock of what we’ve learned, we tend to make the lessons more real, applicable, and accessible for later. Reflecting helps us “connect the threads” of our understanding. Make sure that you follow the directions closely.
Write a 3-page double-spaced essay based on the requirements in the ENGL 1302 Final Course Reflection document and fill out the Bullet Point chart to help organize data. The writing templates are in the chapters from the book, which I have included. I’ve put dots next to the bullet points that I want to use and answer.
Bullet Points:
What do you understand about yourself as a writer that you did not before? (Remember: think “surprise”)
Describe a tough issue that you had to work out, and how you accomplished the task. (The more detailed, the better)
Remember the habits of mind we talked about this semester? Here they are again: (Curiosity, Engagement, Persistence, Flexibility, Creativity, Responsibility, Openness, Metacognition). Which ones were strengthened (where did you see progress) and which ones are still challenging? How would you assess how you stand on this list now versus where you were at in the beginning of the semester?
Did you incorporate anything you learned in English 1302 into other classes, writing projects, etc.? Tell the story of what happened – and what were the surprising results?
For the second bullet point I’ve marked, a tough issue that I had to work out was making more in depth interpretations during the “So What?” section in the Method Analysis and Interpretation project. It was hard to make interpretations based on something simple, like the number of rectangles in a painting and what they represent or might represent.
For the third bullet point, the habit of mind I still find challenging is metacognition because it is difficult to describe my thinking process from start to finish, like showing your work with a math problem. It has improved but is still challenging.
For the fourth bullet point, I have a story of how I have incorporated what I have learned in English 1302 into my Intro to Humanities class. The interpretation skills and using writing templates helped me in my humanities essays and analyzing artworks by being better able to clearly describe artworks in detail and make interpretations based on the evidence, find and identify patterns, making claims and counterclaims with reasons and based on evidence, identify various elements of an artwork, etc. A specific example would be my personal response essay where I had to describe an artwork, make an analysis, and make an evaluation of the artwork. Look at my personal reference essay and the guidelines to get a better understanding of my conclusions.
