This week, through your assigned textbook reading and the videos linked in this week’s announcement, you were introduced to attention and scene perception. You learned how vision scientist use experimental paradigms to study and model attention and distinguish between selective and non selective aspect of attention. You also learned about neural mechanisms of attention and what can happen to people’s attention due to brain damage which bring us to the disorder, visual neglect.

Change and Inattentional Blindness are both failures in visual awareness. Change blindness is the failure to notice an obvious change. Inattentional blindness is the failure to notice the existence of an unexpected item. In each case, we fail to notice something that is clearly visible once we know to look for it.
Can you think of situations in which inattentional and change blindness are highly likely to be a problem?
Can you think of cases in which inattentional blindness and change blindness would not have much of an impact?
If inattentional and change blindness cannot be eliminated, what steps might you take to avoid its consequences?
Visual Neglect (visual hemi-inattention) is a rare neuropsychological disorder of attention in which a person can see all of the visual field but ignores objects on one side. After watching the video, Visual Neglect, answer the following questions:
If you knew someone that was recently diagnosed with visual neglect, how can you assist them with managing this disorder?
What are some interventions that can help someone with visual neglect?
