In 2007, the Central Artery/Tunnel project, a roadway project in Boston, Massachusetts, US, concluded after sixteen years of construction. The project, also known as the Big Dig, was completed nine years after its original 1998 completion date at a cost of $14.6 billion, a figure nearly $12 billion over its original $2.8 billion targeted cost. The original intention of the project was to reroute the Central Artery, which flowed traffic directly through downtown Boston, to an underground tunnel and a series of connections. While drivers now realize a shorter commute through downtown Boston, the project can be considered a failure in terms of cost and schedule overruns and a myriad of other issues, including worker safety, civilian death, and several lawsuits.
