ICD-10-CM
As you read in the textbook and unit lesson, there are many aspects of ICD-10-CM that are important to note as steps to help you in learning this coding system. For example, laterality is identified for left or right sides of the body and is specifically called out in the medical coding process.
In this assignment, you will be writing a short essay to review the ICD-10-CM coding system:
Briefly explain the development of the ICD-10-CM coding system.
Outline the importance of following conventions and guidelines to ensure accurate coding in medical documentation regardless of classification system used.
Identify the format and differences between ICD-10-CM and ICD-9-CM.
Illustrate the ramifications of improper coding and how this may affect medical necessity.
Identify one example of an ICD-10-CM diagnosis code, and include the different levels of specificity that you would need to answer (e.g., right, left).
Your essay must be at least two pages in length, not counting the title and reference pages. Your essay will include an introduction, be well organized, and provide strong evidence of critical thinking. You must use at least two sources, one of which may be your textbook. Please adhere to APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment.
