Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) are currently under development in clinical trials primarily to help patients with motor and speech impairments. Brain activity can be measured using non-invasive methods like electroencepholography (EEG) or invasively using implanted electrodes in the brain. For someone who is paralyzed, they may be able to control a prosthetic or a computer using only their brain activity. We will discuss this topic more in Lecture 19. Brain-computer interfaces could potentially be used in non-impaired healthy individuals to improve their performance, by increasing alertness and detection of sensory stimuli, or increasing reaction times by bypassing muscle contraction. There are ethical issues to consider such as the effects on the subjects, concerns about mind reading and privacy, and access to this new technology. If the FDA approves the use of BCIs in patients now, should healthy adults be allowed to receive brain implants as well?
