Benefits of Humor Informative Research Essay Instructions
This is a five-paragraph research paper, written in the form of an informative essay.
You need to use at least three reliable websites or other trustworthy research sources to gather information for this paper. Cite those sources on your works cited page at the end of your paper. Your works cited page must be in MLA format. DO NOT JUST COPY AND PASTE THE ADDRESSES OF THE WEBSITES. Here is a link to a document that can help you with your works cited page. Page two of the document shows you what a works cited page with five MLA citations looks like. You only need three MLA citations on your works cited page for this research paper.

Every body paragraph needs to contain at least one in-text citation that points to where you found your information. An in-text citation appears in parentheses at the end of a sentence. An in-text citation might come after a direct quote or at the end of a section of your paper that is paraphrased (changed into your own words). The in-text citation directs your reader to one of the MLA citations on your works cited page. It’s not enough just to have a works cited page at the end of your paper; you also need in-text citations to show the reader which source on your works cited page you used to gather the information for each body paragraph. If you know the author of the information’s name, put his or her last name in parentheses. If you don’t know the author’s name, you can put the name of the website in parentheses. Your in-text citation should make it easy to match the information in your body paragraph with one of the MLA citations on your works cited page. Here is a document that may help.

Start by doing research about the benefits of laughter or humor. Pick three important ways humor or laughter can be beneficial. Be sure to bookmark the websites where you find the most helpful information. Take notes from those websites. When taking notes, don’t write sentences. Just jot down phrases in your own words. Always use your own words when note-taking, unless you plan to quote the information. If you find a quote you’d like to use in your paper, copy it onto a notecard word-for-word. Do not have the websites open when you begin writing your paper. Only use your notes that are written in your own words and your notecards. This will help you to avoid accidental plagiarism.
Write a five paragraph informative essay.
Your first paragraph will be the Introduction. Start with an attention grabber. Next, preview each of the three benefits of humor in the same order you will be covering them in your body paragraphs by writing one sentence about each benefit. Do not have any quotes or juicy details in your introduction. Save that stuff for your body paragraphs. Finally, end your introduction with a three-part thesis statement. A three-part thesis statement contains a list. The first item in the list corresponds to Body Paragraph A, the second item to Body Paragraph B, and the third item to Body Paragraph C.
Start Body Paragraph A with a transition (First, To begin, To start,). Your first sentence should be a topic sentence about the first benefit of humor that you mentioned in your thesis statement. Include either a quote or paraphrased text from one of your sources in the middle of the paragraph to support your topic sentence. Never include a quote in the first or last sentence of a body paragraph. Be sure to explain the significance of your quote. End with a concluding sentence. Do not introduce a new idea in your concluding sentence. Simply sum up what you said in the paragraph. Your concluding sentence will be similar to your topic sentence, but you will use different words to avoid redundancy.
Start Body Paragraph B with a transition (Second, Next, In addition,). Your first sentence should be a topic sentence about the second benefit of humor that you mentioned in your thesis statement.
Start Body Paragraph C with a transition (Third, Finally, Lastly,). Your first sentence should be a topic sentence about the third benefit of humor that you mentioned in your thesis statement.
Your final paragraph is your Conclusion. Start with a transition, such as “In conclusion” or “To sum up” and then restate your thesis statement, which was the last sentence of your introduction, using different words. Do not use the exact same words because it will sound redundant. You do not need a three-part list in your restated thesis statement. Next, review each of the three benefits of humor you discussed in the body of your paper in the same order that you covered them in your body paragraphs. Do not introduce any new information in your conclusion. If you introduce new information, it won’t be a conclusion; it will be a fourth body paragraph. End your paper by coming back to your attention grabber, which was the first sentence of your paper. It will give your paper a circular structure and a sense of wholeness.

How Laughter Helps Your Body
Did you know that when you laugh, your body becomes less stressed? It’s true – laughter has awesome physical benefits. Laughing can even temporarily distract you from pain by releasing endorphins in your body. Endorphins are natural mood-boosters that make you feel good.

How Being Funny Helps Your Brain
But laughter and humor don’t just help your body – they also give your brain a boost! Coming up with funny jokes requires creative thinking and looking at things in new ways. This gets your brain working and improves cognitive abilities. Having a good sense of humor can make you more creative and better at seeing things from different perspectives. And get this – using your humor can actually help relieve anxiety, worries and even depression. Laughing reduces mental stress and tension big time.
