Beginning in class on Wednesday, April 3, create a Sequence Outline. Reply to this Topic by outlining in these three steps:
1) Milton passages/quotations: make two columns–Unfallen and Fallen–and bullet (do NOT number) phrases with Book and line number in each column appropriately. Each column needs at least two passages and can include things Eve says or does or how Milton or Adam or Satan describe her.
2) Scholarly reference and literary criticism: again make two columns–unfallen and fallen–and bullet appropriate OED definitions, Bible verses, and quotable phrases from your scholarly research under each column. Here focus on the ones that support your thesis but include at least one scholar who deals with the other side.
3) Look at your two sets of columns and, next, pair up the lists of 2) with their passages/lines of 1); secondly, NUMBER your bulleted items–start with what effectively introduces your argument and build to your strongest point last. At some point in your paper you will need to refute the other side by accounting for those passages and scholars that support them. Your numbered outline should include some refutation as part of your Sequence Outline. Look for organic connections that will make the smoothest transition between passages and scholars.
