BEGIN here. Using research from the Houck & Novak text and Chapter 9 of The Principal as
Instructional Leaders in Literacy, design an organized instrument that supports a balanced
literacy walk-through and that will support the goals of your school literacy program. While your
text for this last assignment has several proprietary checklists included, you will need to consider
the specific needs of your school community as you create your own document.
Also, use the video clips resources available here:
http://www.ascd.org/Publications/Books/Literacy-Unleashed-Book-Video-Clips.aspx
Include the following components in this assignment:
 As an administrator, you will construct five goals for conducting walk-through
evaluations. Consider here your role as an instructional supervisor, data coach, assistant
principal, or principal.
 Include next a statement of what you need to do to prepare your teachers and leadership
for this walk-through process.
 List 5-6 protocols for the visit. (i.e. how long will you be in the room, will you be talking
to any students during this visit?)
 Create a document that reflects the goals of your school and/or district for literacy
growth. This checklist should be appropriate for the school level in which you teach.
(i.e. elementary, middle or high school)
o Categories for observation (i.e. what are you looking for in the teacher’s
instruction? Class environment? Students?) You will need to include a minimum
of five categories to focus on in the walk-through observation checklist.
o After you have created your categories, you will need to add the indicators of the
teacher behaviors you will be marking on your checklist. What patterns are you
hoping to see?(this can be bulleted)
o The final category in the checklist should include a space for a ‘Glow’ and a
‘Grow’ statement to be written.
 The last component of this assignment is a statement of how this walk-through checklist
will foster balanced literacy development and growth in your school and/or district. How
will it be used to plan professional learning in your school?
