Before starting this assignment, please see attachement “English Overview powerpoint” that specifically address how to write a proper thesis sentence.
There is no more important sentence than the thesis. It must be the final sentence in paragraph #1. If it is not done correctly, your whole paper will lack focus and may end up being an informative rather than an argumentative paper. Below are 15 possible thesis sentences. Some were written correctly, some were not. If the statement is factual and can be proven, then it is NOT a thesis statement as a thesis statement must always be an opinion. For this assignment, you need to submit the following:
(1) a numbered list of all 15 and indicate a “C” for correctly written thesis and a “W” for a wrongly written thesis.
(2) For those that are wrong (W), you must rewrite it so that it is an argumentative thesis sentence. You must underline, bold, or in some way identify the word (or short phrase) you are using to make it a correctly written thesis. See example below
(3) For those that are correct, you need to underline, bold, or in some way identify the single word (or short phrase) that makes it a correctly written thesis. See example below
Below are examples of how this should look (These are not part of the actual assignment. They are simply the model you should follow)
Two potential thesis statements that may or may not be correctly written:
(1) Public schools across America are addressing problems in schools by requiring school uniforms.
(2) Exercising has proven to bring enormous health benefits, and all individuals need to designate time each day to incorporate this into their lives
Correct responses if those above were part of the exercise:
(1). W.  Correction:  To address problems in public schools, all school districts should require students to wear uniforms.
(2). C.  “need to”
Note:  “should” and “need to” are opinion statements, so they turn the statement into a correctly written thesis statement.
Assignment #3 Exercise:
(1) The negative impact social media has had and continues to have is surging at record numbers with increases in anxiety, depression, eating disorders.
(2) Although some think that social media is all fun and games, it tends to leave young people with a bad mindset about their bodies, it causes sleep deprivation, and it can eventually cause depression and anxiety.
(3) Digital technology is beneficial to people and should be used by individuals daily to benefit their lives.
(4) Although social media provides society with platforms to stay connected with one another, it has also proven to be addictive, detrimental to one’s health, and has caused unhealthy sleep patterns.
(5) Social media has been used as a crutch for society to interact, but it is time to take a step back and limit the use in adults and children.
(6) Too much technology and social media negatively affects teens; more restrictions and guidance should be placed on devices by both parents and social media companies to prevent this.
(7) Social media is a lifesaving and knowledge building machine for mankind.
(8) The negative impact of social media on teens has been surging at record numbers; therefore,  safeguards must be put in place to reduce the use of these platforms.
(9) The use of social media should be limited because it can lead to cyberbullying, depression, social anxiety, suicide, and body image issues.
(10) Because social media leaves many young people with a bad mindset about their bodies and causes sleep deprivation, depression, and anxiety, individuals must avoid it.
(11) The federal government should impose age restrictions for all social media outlets that will make it so users on all platforms have to be at least 18 years old.
(12) Regulation and education for safe use is needed because the negative effects of social media pose numerous threats to our society and to all individuals
(13) Throughout the United States, social media usage has created substantial risks for children between the age of eight to fifteen years old, including cyberbullying and online predators, which can significantly impact their physical and mental health.
(14) Social media has had tremendous positive impacts in society, so all individuals should take advantage of its many benefits.
(15) Social media impacts users negatively, and everyone should limit their online intake.
