Leadership and Management Interview Paper
Description
Interview a social worker who is currently in leadership or a high-level management position with people under them within the social services practice setting. The interviewee should be someone other than a classmate in the MSW Program or a social work faculty member. The interviewee may be a supervisor, a director at your place of employment or practicum, or a close acquaintance such as a family member or friend who is a social worker in a leadership role. Take notes during your interview.
During the interview, ask the following questions.
How would you describe your leadership style?
How do your personal life experiences influence your leadership style?
What values guide your leadership style? How does your leadership style exemplify these values?
What if anything brings you joy as an administrator in the human services sector or in your practice setting?
How do you use emotional intelligence as a leader?
How do you motivate others? What skills do you use?
How does your leadership style work with conflict? What skills do you use?
How would you describe the organizational culture of your program or agency? How does that differ or align with your own cultural background and leadership style?
How does your organization, and you as a leader, strive to promote inclusion within the organization and demonstrate cultural competence?
What is your greatest leadership challenge? Celebration moment?
What else would you like me to know about diversity and leadership?
Reflect on the responses from the interviewee then use your interview notes to answer the following questions. Type your responses in the form of an interview paper using the headers below (words in bold, italicized font). Failure to use headers results in a reduction of points. Include an APA title page with your interview paper. In-text reference citations and a reference page are not needed.  However, if you use any direct quotes from your readings, then ensure you follow APA 7th edition standards. Professional writing and good grammar are expected throughout this 4-5 page paper (excluding the cover page and a reference page if included) (10 pts).
Leadership Style: Based on the leadership styles you learned about and your interviewee noted, what leadership style best describes your interviewee? Give specific examples regarding how they use emotional intelligence and explain specific traits and behaviors that typify the leadership style you identified. (20 pts)
Social Work Values: What specific values were important to your interviewee?  How do they coincide with social work values? How did those values influence his or her leadership style? (10 pts)
Motivational Skills:  What specific skills does your interviewee use to motivate others? How do these motivational skills reflect emotional intelligence? (10 pts)
Conflict Resolution Skills: What skills does your interviewee use to resolve conflicts with others? Identify specific skill sets based on our readings (10 pts)
Organizational Culture: How does your interviewee’s leadership style influence his or her organizational culture? (10 pts)
Cultural Competence: How does your interviewee use his or her skills to promote inclusion and cultural competence? What does culturally competent leadership look like? (10 pts)
Strengths & Areas of Growth: What did you learn from your interview that you can apply to your own leadership style? What is the most important point about emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and social competence you learned from your interviewee would you like to integrate into your leadership style? What are the most important motivational skills you would like to integrate into your leadership style? As a leader, what influence would you like to have on the organizational culture of your agency? (25 pts)
