Instructions
News reflections will be premised on the sociological imagination, and must apply course concepts and theoretical perspectives.
Each student will be required to submit their notes and a written reflection – 2 files.
Now write the REFLECTION
This assignment requires that you apply sociological concepts, you are not just reporting the news – that is in your notes – make sure you make connections to the course content as you analyze the story. Apply theories and concepts from the course readings to the stories. These means that you can present the story as an example of ______ theory, or the story relates to the concept of ______. Do not just name the theory or concept, but explain how the story connects to the theory/concept.
Reflect on how the story ties to sociological concepts
Select one story from the newscast to connect to one of the three theoretical perspectives:
conflict theory,
functionalism or
symbolic interactionism.
Very briefly describe the story.
In your own words explain what the theory means to you
Explain how the story connects to the theoretical perspective chosen.
This first section should be at least 150 words minimum
Select a second news story that you can connect to a sociological concept from the textbook (think key terms, words in bold in your textbook) you have learned. ***Do not select a second theoretical perspective, you are only using one, you must identify a concept from your textbook***
Very briefly introduce the story – if it is the same story as above, no new summary needed.
Define in your own words the concept you will apply/relate to this news story.
Explain how that concept connects to the second news story.
This second section should be at least 150 words minimum
Finally, in at least 100 words, explain the importance of watching the news on a regular basis for supporting your sociological imagination. What is your sociological imagination and how does reading and watching the news support it?
Include at the bottom of your reflection the total word count, i.e.: “Word Count: ###”
Write your reflection in complete paragraphs totaling at least 400 words and no more than 650 words.
