Assignment: Proposal for the Personal Narrative
Directions: A proposal is a document that sets forth what a writer expects or “proposes” to deliver for a larger project to be completed. Your proposal for this Week 10 assignment will consist of 2 parts: a brief outline and a short explanatory paragraph. Use ONE document for both. See the example below.
Click here for an overview of the directions and writing prompt for this and the forthcoming narrative assignment (the directions are in this week’s module).
EXAMPLE of what you should submit for the narrative proposal:
Please use only ONE document. On your Word document type:
Your name:
Topic: State what your narrative will be about
(For example:) Topic: The First Time I Saw Snow
1. Briefly outline how you will organize the essay: (The “for examples” paraphrase Alvarez’s “Snow.”)
Introduction (state the main who and what your essay will focus on; for example: “the first time I saw snow”)
Body para 1 (provide some background (where/when) and what happened next; for example: “My family moved to NY when I was a little girl; I didn’t know English, and I began to learn basic vocabulary.”)
Body para 2 (what happened next; for example: “Outside, the world was tense with fear of war; I learned new words, and the teacher drew a scary picture on the blackboard.”)
Body para 3 (what happened next; for example: “I looked out the window and what I saw looked like what the teacher had drawn on the blackboard.”)
Conclusion (a thoughtful observation about what happened; state the why or allow the reader to infer it; for example: “The teacher explained what I was seeing; I had made a mistake. Mistakes happen; as individuals, we are all special.”
2. In a short (about 80-100 words) paragraph, state what you will write about and discuss why you have chosen this particular topic. Focus on one particular event and the place where it happened that somehow changed you, or caused you to look at life in a different way.
Submission directions: Please upload only ONE Word document. Submit the assignment using the link below. Emailed files or other attachments are not accepted.
This is not a research assignment. You should not use any outside (secondary) sources. Stay away from the internet.
If any part of your paper is not your own work–AI-generated work falls into this category–and you have not given credit to the author or source your submission will be graded accordingly.
Topic: An event that happened to me where I live (or lived), or work (or worked)
Writing prompt: Think of an experience you had relating either to the workplace or to a place where you live or lived. Maybe it is the place or neighborhood where you live now, or maybe it was a place where you lived previously. Focus on one particular event that happened in this place that somehow changed you, or caused you to look at life in a different way. How did the experience you had in that place change, or affect you?
DIRECTIONS: Tell your experience in the form of a short narrative essay of about 600 words.
