Assignment Overview
There are many words or terms that we think we can easily and quickly define, but upon closer examination there are nuances within the term and different ways in which we can define it. Examples you might consider are: home, love, American Dream, a good mother, the term hero, or even the term teenager.
Your task is to select a common word or term, and then write a definition essay to explain all the variations in how it can be used/defined.Remember to pick a term that has several different ways in which it could be defined. You may even consider defining something from your field of study or work.
For this essay:
Select a term commonly used but with different possible definitions
Research different components of the term such as the historical definition, how it is currently used, relevant examples of its use both past and present, how it might change in the future, its impact on society and society’s impact on it
Develop a thesis that presents your definition
Use your research to provide a deeper understanding of the term
This is a research essay; do not use “I” or present information as personal opinion
Grading & Submission
A rubric is available on Blackboard. The key categories for grading are: thesis/evidence, organization, MLA formatting, and grammar. You must use in-text citations and include a Works Cited page in MLA format with at least 5 sources; three of those sources must be from the library databases.
Length: 500+ words
The Submission: Submit an electronic copy done in Word via Canvas. If for any reason Canvas doesn’t work, email the document as an attachment (not as a One Drive document) to Dr. E. Late papers will have an automatic point deduction.
