Assignment Instructions
Write an 1800- 2000 word research report (NOT a creative writing or opinion-based essay) describing the role of communication in your chosen career field.
EVERY career has some kind of communication requirements—your goal is to understand what those unique requirements are for a particular job. This could include career opportunities, training required, trends in the industry, etc.
Examples: If you are interested in healthcare management, you may want to examine the field of Health Communication. A sports management major may want to look at careers in Sports Communication or how good coaches communicate with players. An IT professional could research how best to communicate technical information to those who are less information-savvy. Accountants might focus on the importance of concise communication with clients, human resources majors might look at managing conflict communication, etc.
The more narrow you are able to make your topic, the easier it will be to write and research. The exact direction you take in the paper is up to you, as long as all requirements are met.
Requirements:
Each paper requires a minimum of 8 sourcesincluding at least:
At least 1 interview conducted by you in person, by phone, or by video (this could be with someone in your chosen field, someone in the career center, a faculty member from that department, etc.). You do not need to turn in a recording or transcript of this conversation as long as you cite the interview appropriately in your paper (See APA resources). This isn’t like a job interview. Instead, you’ll prepare some questions related to the topic of your paper and have a conversation with someone working or teaching in the career field you are interested in pursuing.
At least 2 scholarly sources (Use Google Scholar or the library database to find journals. Textbooks also count as scholarly sources!) See Recommended Sources.docx
Other sources might be books, news articles, additional interviews or scholarly articles.
Avoid sources like Wikipedia.
Sources must be cited in proper APA style (including in-text citations).
Use headings and subheadings where needed
2000 words (NOT including references)
An APA style reference page
A title page is NOT required.
