Assignment Criteria: Write a ten to twelve-page fictional piece. While you are free to choose the topic of your story, it too
should reflect specific elements including a well-rounded character, attention to setting, the use of
engaging dialogue that moves the story forward, a well-thought-out plot progression, an awareness
of temporal movement and focalization, and finely honed prose. Use the third person POV.
This is the idea that I have and want to base the story on.
Colton stands at the edge of a rocky mountain, gazing out over the vast expanse of the ocean. The clear blue sky above him seems to stretch on forever, and the deep blue sea below seems to reach out to infinity. Mighty waves crash into the rocks below, sending a misty breeze and the salty smell of the ocean up towards Colton.
He takes a deep breath, filling his lungs with the salty air, and closes his eyes. He can hear the seagulls cawing in the distance and the rhythmic sound of the waves crashing against the rocks. The warmth of the sun beats down on his face, and he can feel the rough texture of the rocks beneath his feet.
As he opens his eyes, he takes in the beauty of his surroundings. The ocean sparkles in the sunlight, and the waves seem to dance in the breeze. The rocky mountain he stands upon is covered in moss and various types of vegetation, and he can see the occasional seagull flying above.
Colton feels a sense of peace wash over him as he takes it all in. He knows that he’s lucky to have found this spot, a place where he can come and simply be with his thoughts. He feels a sense of connection to nature that he can’t quite explain, and he’s grateful for the beauty that surrounds him.
As he sits there in silence, taking in the beauty of his surroundings. The sun starts to set and he heads back home.
I want the story to revolve around the character Colton. He recently loss his grandmother whom he loved dearly and took care of. Hes quite and timid and mostly keeps to himself. He had friends but he has been distant since then which causes most of them to drift away. He feels alone.
I want the story to be about his day to day life and how hes trying to cope with grief and losing somone so close to him. Nothing feels the same to him, the grass is not as green, the sky is not as blue.
This rocky mountain spot above is a place he visited once before and it is the place he felt most at peace. He longs to go back to that place and feel that type of peace that he had that day. But he is afraid that if he goes now, he won’t find the peace he once knew. This place is symbollic to his grief.
I want the story to begin with him remembering this place and end with him going back to this place to find peace.
