Assignment 1
-Please follow guidelines in syllabus and Canvas for assignment. Remember to include in-text citations and a full references page; if you do not include these, there is up to a 5-point grade penalty.
There is no page minimum, but typical (good papers) are in the 4-6 page limit (7 page maximum).
Make sure to answer all of the following questions for Assignment One:
1.) Who were Miner’s Nacirema? What information does the article give to identify them? After reading the article and the accompanying class material, why do you think Miner wrote and described the Nacirema the way he did?
2.) What are some ethically questionable studies that have occurred while studying human populations (consider examples in textbook)? Consider at least one from your textbook and/or lecture. Why is it ethically questionable (or wrong). Also, consider potentially new technologies (such as designer babies or another) and discuss whether you think this would would be ethically sound or not. Please explain your thoughts. You should also consult the American Anthropological Association’s list of ethical obligations to guide you: AAA Ethics Statement

3.) After reading about primates (chapter six/seven) and watching the Vice video on bushmeat (consult Canvas module and Vice Video: Bushmeat and Ebola
Links to an external site.), what are your thoughts on the bushmeat crisis (i.e., what did you learn about it, anything that surprised you, opinions on the practice- you must mention information from the film).
Additionally, investigate (online) to see if any organizations are involved in stopping the practice. Name at least one organization and explain how they are trying to stop the practice. Do you agree with their methods – why/why not? Do you have some ideas of your own regarding solutions?
4.) Find an anthropology article (from a credible news source, biological anthropology preferable, and one that I have not assigned).
Give a very brief summary of the article. Why did you choose this article and what stood out to you from it? How does it relate to (biological) anthropology? What new scientific findings are being reported? What are the implications of these new findings for anthropology/humanity? What questions or comments do you have about this article?
