Assessment Description
As a teacher, you will have a variety of students who have diverse family backgrounds. Children are significantly affected by the environment outside of school. Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory emphasized the importance of considering a child’s environment into consideration when attempting to understand their development.
Read the scenario below to inform the assignment that follows.
Adriana, age 5
Adriana is a kindergartener. She comes from a single-parent household with three older siblings. Her mother is employed at a local fast-food establishment and typically works long hours. Adriana spends time with a babysitter while mom is at work. Recently, Adriana has displayed aggressive behavior, usually on Mondays after having spent a weekend with her father. She will cry and hit other students when she first arrives in the morning.
Usually, Adrianna does not show any emotion in the classroom. She does not have friends in the classroom and prefers to play alone away from the other students. She is often seen in parallel play. When students try to interact with her, she will not make eye contact and will push them away. Adriana does not talk unless spoken to and she does not willingly share when asked questions during large group time. When asked what her name is, she will only state her first name.
Your center serves breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack. During these times, Adrianna does not use utensils preferring to eat with her fingers. She has difficulty using an open cup.
Adrianna has not been able to recognize her name when presented. She is not able to identify or name any uppercase or lowercase letters. She is able to identify numerals 1 and 3 but no other numerals. She can rote count to 8 and count 3 items consistently using one-to-one correspondence.
In a 500-750 word essay, address the following based on the case study above:
Identify indicators that show a delay in development in comparison to typical development. Cite evidence from the case study that demonstrates the delays and compare them to what typical development should be.
Based on Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, discuss the different systems that could have influenced Adriana’s development.
Identify school or community professionals you should collaborate with when providing support for Adriana.
Reflect on what you know about Adriana’s culture and environment. How you will remain culturally sensitive while working with the student and her family?
Support your essay with a minimum of 2-3 resources.
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
