As you are undoubtedly coming to realize, the role of national identity in a global society can be hard to define and discuss. On the world stage and throughout history, governments of all kinds have sought to preserve their national identity and important cultural values through laws, policy, and practice. In some cases, these efforts are lauded and celebrated by individual citizens. In other cases, these efforts are challenged as isolationist or even harmful to individuals and individual rights.
ASSIGNMENT INFORMATION
Research a nationalist movement in a foreign government that seeks to preserve some elements of culture or identity. Be sure that you can identify the movement’s concerns and goals. France, England, Hungary, and Greece are just a few examples of such movements in Europe. Find situations in which individuals have celebrated these efforts as well as situations in which these efforts have been a cause for concern.
