As we learned in Lesson 2 of the module, millions of American households struggle with food insecurity. Children living in food-insecure households often lack the food they need. Yet, nearly one-third of the world’s food supply is estimated to be lost or wasted. Nearly 3,200 pounds of food is wasted in the United States per person going hungry. How does this even happen? Societal stigma plays into this.
After watching the videos (Food Insecurity in America and Technology and Food Waste) and answering the associated quiz questions, discuss diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
Diversity: Who is or isn’t represented, and what can we do about it? How do we change it?
Equity: What are our assumptions about families and individuals who suffer from food insecurity?
Inclusion: Who is or isn’t included? What can we do so the environment is more welcome for everyone while focusing on those notably excluded?
Justice: Choose one of the following: 1. public policy, 2. institutional practices, or 3. cultural messages, and discuss what is needed to achieve and sustain equity for those suffering from food insecurity.
Be sure to form your answers, addressing each topic above thoroughly.
