As discussed in Penn Central v. City of New York, the city has the power to preserve landmarks and historic districts for the benefit of the community, restricting the land’s use by landowners. For this week’s assignment, please pick:
1. ONE historic preservation district in any city to discuss. Here is a list of historic preservation districts in Orlando, for example.
https://www.orlando.gov/Our-Government/History/Historic-Preservation-Districts
OR
2. TWO historic landmarks in two different cities to discuss. Here is a list of historic landmarks in Orlando, for example.
https://www.orlando.gov/Our-Government/History/Find-Historic-Landmarks
Directions for this assignment:
1. Write at least 200 words about your historic preservation site.
2. Explain the history of the site.
3. Explain why it has been designated for preservation and the date that it was designated as such.
4. Discuss if there was a fight with the landowner regarding this site and what was the basis for the altercation.
5. You must include at least one picture of the site.
6. You must include a link to your sources of information for this assignment.
7. You must look up and include a link to the city preservation code that pertains to the site and provide the title and source of the historic preservation code. Here is a link to the Orlando city municipal code pertaining to district and landmark preservation, for example:
https://library.municode.com/fl/orlando/codes/code_of_ordinances/391716?nodeId=TITIICICO_CH62HIPRARDE_PT2HIPR_SS62.202–62.299RE
The title and source would be, for example, Historic Preservation and Architectural Design, Chapter 62 of the Orlando Municipal Code.
8. As always, no student is allowed to cover the same landmark or historic district so you can claim your site or sites on the discussion board first before completing the assignment if you’d like. You also cannot use Penn Central Station, which was the preservation site discussed in the case. You can, however, choose one of the historic districts or landmarks from Orlando that I’ve included here. Choosing a site from your hometown and/or place or birth will get you extra credit!! Please indicate on the assignment if it is your place of birth or hometown and, again, you cannot cover the site if another student has already claimed it. 🙂
Have fun! I’m looking forward to the results of your interesting research! Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this assignment.
