While many observers define China’s actions in Xinjiang as genocide, note that their persecution of Uygher Muslims in this region contrasts with the nation’s relative tolerance of Hui Muslims elsewhere in the country. Uygher and Hui are two of the fifty-six recognized ethnicities of China. The Han Chinese form the majority (close to 92%).
