Read Squeeze Play 2009 located in Module 2: Lecture Materials & Resources.
This was a qualitative study utilizing telephone interviews as the methodology and using descriptive date (percentages) to describe the results. It’s an example of how qualitative research is conducted and how it can be reported.
After reading the article, write an article analysis that answers the following questions:
- Look at the sample characteristics. Are these the sampling characteristics you would have chosen for this study?
- How do the sampling characteristics relate to the population?
- Regarding the household income, 45% of those surveyed was $49,000 and under with 24% under $25,000. How important would income be in answering this survey? Would it have been beneficial to separate the income into different levels? Would it have been beneficial to separate out the respondents with incomes of $75,000 or more which made up 31% of the respondents?
- Does this article really ‘generalize’ the public’s view on college costs today?
- How would you change this study to be more “generalizable” to the population?
- This study was done in 2009. How would you change it to reflect current times?
