After reading my lecture and perusing the assessment handout and Pinterest board on assessment, you should have a fairly good idea that assessing artwork is not black and white.
For this assignment, you will locate an image of a child’s artwork. This may be something you find on the internet, it may be a digital photo or a scan you make from a child you know, etc. You must be able to paste the image into a word document. Often times you will find an art lesson online which includes samples of student art work. These are excellent for this activity, as they include the actual lesson that took place to create the work, including the objective of the lesson (what the child was supposed to accomplish in the process of completing the artwork.)
Then you will assess/evaluate the child’s artwork. Here is the tricky part…you must determine for what you are assessing. Are you assessing their ability to follow directions in the completion of the work? Are you assessing their use of specific elements of design or principles of art? Are you assessing their use of specific materials or a subject matter? Refer to The Pocket Guide to Simple Art Assessment as well as your text book (for the questions used in various evaluative strategies – judging, describing, interpreting, analyzing) to assist you.
This is a very “open” assignment. The main requirements are these:
you have an image of a child’s artwork with as much descriiptive information as you can about the work, the age of the child who created it, the medium used, the objective for the artwork, etc. (5 points)
you have some format for assessing/evaluating the artwork (include the checklist, or rubric, or evaluative questions, etc.) (5 points)
you actually use this format to evaluate/assess the artwork (you fill out the checklist, or rubric, or answer the evaluative questions, etc.) (5 point)
you explain WHY you chose this particular method/format to evaluate the work and explain how you could use this method, or others, to evaluate/assess your own students’ work in the future. (5 points)
Please compress the photos and save this as a Word document (.doc or .docx) if possible. If you must use another format, please contact me ahead of time so we may discuss options.
