Answer the following questions below.
Directions: Please provide thoughtful responses to the following questions. You will provide your answers on the “Proposal Assignment” link. Endeavor to develop your answers as completely as possible in order to help you think about this upcoming research essay.
What major elements of fiction will you focus on in researching for this essay? Explain in some detail what you will focus on at this point of your understanding of the novel.
How do you think these elements will help you to not only analyze the novel, but also deepen your understanding of the text?
Create a research question: Example: How does childhood trauma impact the understanding of God Help the Child?
What key search terms do you think will be useful in researching your ideas? (Example: Morrison and God Help the Child and trauma)
Provide a “working thesis”
What will you need to argue to support your thesis?
Note: Keep your focus on the novel only and what Morrison is arguing in relationship to the themes, characters, etc. I am not looking for a research essay on a theme idea such as childhood trauma, which means your research needs to be focused on scholarly articles written about the novel only. You will need your proposal and Annotated Bibliography approved, so do check back for my comments as soon as you see this graded and do reach out for any questions or help you might need.
Here is a sample annotated bibliography as well as 4 short videos that I highly encourage you to watch.

Make sure you have spent time working through the various components of researching online in the SBCC Library and do make sure you have TWO Peer Reviewed sources for your Annotated Bibliography on the Novel only and NOT on a theme idea such as abuse, etc.. So do search for sources that discuss the novel itself and make sure you are not using book reviews – the sources must be peer reviewed in order to be approved.
Annotated Bibliography
The purpose is let the reader know not only which sources you will be using for this essay, but a summary of each of those resources. Note on the following sample, that I summarized the article, and only chose to include a few quotes. The summary is primarily to be in your own words. Also, notice the formatting. The entry at the top is the same entry I would use on a works cited page. Also, as you develop your summary -make sure you indent; it is double spaced and when more than one source, alphabetize by author’s last name.
The three parts of an annotated bibliography:
Summarize the source; see handout on Summary
Use quotations sparingly. Put quotation marks around any words from the source and cite.
Evaluate the source for credibility including bias and relevance
Discuss how this source contributes to your research.
Here is a sample:
Schenck, Mary Jane. “Jessie Fauset: The Politics of Fulfillment vs. the Lost Generation.” South Atlantic Review, vol. 66, no. 1, 2001, pp. 102–125. JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/3202031.
Schenck discusses Fauset’s background and the possible influences these had on her novel, and her interactions with organizations such as NAACP and DuBois. Some of the key themes found in Fauset’s novel are discussed, such as marriage, male and female roles, sexuality, and racism. Schneck discusses in detail the Great War in the later half of the novel and how Fauset based much of the details of this part of the novel on actual historical information that mirrored a memoir published in 1920 by Addie Hunton and Kathryn Johnson: Two Colored Women with the American Expeditionary Forces. In addition to discussing the historical significance of the war upon the characters, Schenck explores the ideas of Enlightenment and modernism through the eyes of returning soldiers, and how the end of war was a time of renewed hope for social changes. This is a credible source as it is published in a well known academic journal as well as the author is a credible authority on Fauset’s works. Additionally the issues discussed include evidence and research from other credible sources. Because this essay focuses on modernism, historical perspectives, and gender roles in relationship to the novel, Schenck’s understanding of Fauset’s ideas are relevant to the discussion of the main characters in the novel. Additionally, Schenck’s essay provides an insightful analysis that supports other writer’s analysis of Fauset’s work; this will be relevant to my current research on Fauset and gender roles in marriage.
