Answer the following discussion prompts in at least 350 words. You must post first before you can respond to your classmates. Two responses to classmates are expected, containing 150 words each.
First, discuss the objective realities of the death penalty as opposed to the myths surrounding the death penalty that you learned in this module. What was the most surprising thing to learn about the death penalty in this module and why? After what you have learned in this module, is the death penalty ethical? Explain. What ethical system does your response fall in line with?
NOTE: This discussion is NOT a debate on whether you are personally for or against the death penalty (the reason is that you can understand the objective realities of the death penalty and still be for or against, or still unsure). I want you to focus on if the death penalty is ethical based on the facts you learned AND the ethical systems you learned this semester. It is still ok to state if you are for or against (or still unsure) the death penalty, but no arguing why you think you’re right and others are wrong. Use material from Module 7 and the video lecture to back up your responses.
Second, use this site List & Description of Innocence Cases on Death Row OR Wrongful Conviction Podcast with Jason Flom to choose a case of a wrongfully convicted person that was exonerated. Provide a synopsis of the case in your own words and describe the factors that led to the wrongful conviction.
Third, discuss what you learned surrounding wrongful convictions and the reasons why there are so many wrongful convictions. What surprised you the most from this section and why?
Finally, explain how Module 7 expanded your growth as an individual and as a “learning expert” on wrongful convictions and the death penalty.
