Annotations and Reverse Outlines
I would like you to practice annotations and try writing a reverse outline.
Step One – Sample Narratives:
Read:
“Always Living in Spanish” by Marjorie Agosin – Professional Literacy Narrative
“Discourse Community Guide to a Sorority” – Sample Discourse Community Guide
Step Two – Read
Read through this slideshow for instructions on how to create a reverse outline:
Annotation, Peer Review, and Reverse Outline – Student Samples
Optional: Watch this video for more!

Step Three – Annotate
·
Print out either
Agosin’s narrative or the student            sample paper (your choice!) and annotate
using              whatever techniques you would like. You can also do this digitally if you
wish. I typically will just use Google Docs,    use a different number of colors
to highlight different         ideas, and make comments for my annotations.                Experiment
and find what method works for you!
·
Go through the second
narrative (whichever you didn’t choose for the first option), but this time,
just try the     Reverse Outline technique. Be sure you type out your        reverse
outline, as you will be submitting it here. As a         reminder, the steps to
complete a reverse outline are:
1.
Step One: In the
left-hand margin, write down the topic of each paragraph. Try to use as few   words as possible.
2.
Step Two: In the
right-hand margin, write       details from the paragraph, what the reader       learns
from the paragraph, etc. Be brief, but        include whatever details summarize the
point    and topic of the paragraph for you.
3.
Step Three: Write an
outline based on your    notes. Begin each section with what you wrote    from step one
and follow it with what you wrote  from step two.
Here is an example of a reverse outline:
1.
Lucas Pasqualin is packing up his bedroom and is heading to   college.
·
He introduces us to the main focus of this paper –  his
literacy.
2.
Lucas’ mother tries to get him to get rid of some of his books.
·
Lucas emphasizes how important books are to him.
3.
He looks at some of his favorite books in the box.
·
This paragraph makes the connection between      some specific
texts and his literacy. It foreshadows     which books and influences are to come.
4.
Lucas describes how he was reading advanced books at a       very
young age.
·
Again, the importance of reading is emphasized,    and we are
introduced to this first influence: JK              Rowling
5.
Etc…
Step Four – Write
Write your answers to the following questions for the first   sample narrative:
Did you print the essay or annotation online? If       online, what software/system did you use?
Which annotation techniques did you use?
Did you find annotating the text helped you to        retain the content better? Was this a useful            exercise for comprehension? (You are always        allowed to say no:)
