Annotated Bibliography Assignment:
An annotated bibliography is a research gathering assignment. In this assignment for this module, students will gather and present information/research for their next essay. The essay is NOT a part of this module nor assignment. An annotated bibliography is an assignment where a student provides THREE parts: citation, summary paragraph, and analysis paragraph.
Required Research/Sources: Students will write annotated bibliography on four credible sources. One of the sources is linked below–“US House Passes Bill That Could Ban TikTok.” Before students can begin writing their annotated bibliography, students need to find THREE other sources that can provide support in their future essay that will be assigned in the next module. ONE of the three sources must come from the Moraine Valley library databases. The other TWO sources can be from the web or any other format of the student’s choosing.
U.S. House Passes Bill That Could Ban TikTok – The New York Times-1.pdf
The three parts of an annotated bibliography:
1. MLA work cited entry–this is the source that is listed on a work cited page (Goes first–above the paragraphs).
2. A 100-200 word summary paragraph of the article/source–Paraphrasing the source in your own words
3. A 100-200 word analysis paragraph of the article/source–can show how useful the article is to your next essay/how you can use it in your paper/ what do you think about the information in the article?/agree or disagree with reasons
Directions:
Students will write an annotated bibliography that shows the FOUR sources from the directions above that could possibly be used in their next essay. The annotated bib will include a citation and TWO paragraphs for each source: one paragraph of summary and one paragraph of analysis of the source. The four sources must be in alphabetical order.
Brief Topic Description for Upcoming Research Essay That Will be Written in the Next Module:
Currently, the US Congress is debating whether or not to ban the social media app TikTok or be forced to be sold to an American company or possibly the government. Should the government have the right to ban apps in this manner? Why or Why not? Since this is a bipartisan bill, it means that members of congress both Democrat and Republican are in favor of banning TikTok or forcing it to sell to the Americans, so this paper should not be slanted against one party; therefore, it should not be an essay that focuses on Democratic nor Republican views. The focus of the essay is on whether or not the government should have a right to create a bill that not only bans TikTok, which will also ban any future apps that the government deems unfit. Choose ONE side, either for or against this issue/bill. Students will support their points with credible sources.
Getting Started:
First, take some time to reflect on this topic. Think about your experience using apps like TikTok. What problems did you see? What are the positives? Do you see the same problems with TikTok as the US government? How can this bill pose issues for other apps? What suggestions can be made to improve these problems? You are not writing an essay on this topic yet, but gathering research on this topic.
Format For This Assignment:
The Annotated Bib must follow MLA format in heading, typed double spaced in a standard font, and each paragraph is indented. Students will arrange sources in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. The MLA citation is written first, located above the summary and analysis paragraphs. Then, students will write a summary paragraph, using their own words that show the key points without direct quoting. The second paragraph is an analysis of how you can use the source in your next essay. The analysis can include some of the following information: show your thoughts about the information in the source/where you could use it in your next paper/ how you can apply it to the topic/can show how it will not work in your essay as well. Students should NOT use any direct quotes/quote sandwiches in the annotated bib. Students are writing a summary and an analysis, so the information should come from the student’s words/ideas/views. Each paragraph must be 100-200 words, which is about six to eight sentences.
These three parts are required of the 4 sources that you might use for the next essay. As a reminder, one of the four sources is the article linked above (US House Passes Bill That Could Ban TikTok) and another source must come from the MVCC library databases. Students can find the other two sources from the web or from the databases. Students must use two of the sources from their annotated bib on the next paper.
Please click the link below to view a sample annotated bib entry to use as a guide. Students should not plagiarize information from the source. Please summarize and analyze each source in your words, and do not use direct quotes. Students should not plagiarize by copying and pasting information–watch all of the videos in this module to learn how to write a proper summary, analysis, and paraphrase. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
