Written Assignment Details & Rubric
Synthesis – Contemporary Global Issues
Analyze the origins, historical contexts, and implications of contemporary global issues.
Explain the complex nature and interdependence of contemporary global issues using a multi-disciplinary approach.
Articulate in writing a critical perspective on contemporary global issues using evidence as support.
To help demonstrate the achievement of the Bac-Core Synthesis course learning objectives outlined above, you will be asked to complete six short writing assignments. These will come to you as question prompts at different stages of the class. The questions vary term to term but follow the time frames given below: Check the specific assignment slot for each prompt.
Week 1 – Before looking into the course or other resources, which foods dominated the food supply and why those and not others?
Week 3 – Share how to choose and use raw and processed foods.
Week 5 – Contemplate climate justice and how is it connected to crop production.
Week 7 – What food myth or poorly understood concept would you like to see clarified?
Week 10 -What needs to happen to feed the world in a future with even more people?
In reviewing these question you will see that the week 1 question is a baseline question – what do you know about world foods as you begin this class. We expect some students to have very little knowledge and others much more. There are no right or wrong answers to this or the other questions but this class is an analysis and synthesis class, so we do expect that you will write well-thought-through, yet concise answers. This grading rubric will be used to assess your answers:
1 point – Good writing – proper sentences, spelling, punctuation, organization, and format.
2 points – Quality – include real information; don’t leave the reader with more questions; use succinct and direct writing.
3 points – Depth – present all facets, perspectives, considerations; address more than surface issues. Did you connect course concepts?
2 points – Opinions – separate emotions from substance -recognize when you are speaking from your emotions and state emotions as emotions. Did you bring a clear premise and then show why your thinking has merit?
2 points – Citations – include citations and sources for information that came from another source. Citations are not required but powerful and are proper if you include the work/thoughts/ideas of others. The Writing assignment for Week 1 will not have citations or sources as we are asking for your baseline information. You can earn 10 points without citations/sources for Week 1.
We are looking mostly for good thinking and good writing. Be precise and concise. Past experience has shown that students are able to obtain 8-10 points on a writing assignment by writing 2-3 paragraphs, depending on the question, of well thought through information. The Week 10 prompt covers a broader topic, requires a minimum word length, and is worth 20 points.
