Essay should be typed and double-spaced. Cite all quotations and paraphrases. Writing is NOT a series of continuous quotations. Make it clear to the reader (instructor) that you read the text carefully.
Write a thesis statement (central argument) in your introduction, then develop the thesis and provide historical evidence (body of the text), and end with a closing paragraph.
Do not forget that historical writing uses formal language rather than conversational language and slang.
Use Chicago Manual of Style. It is required that you do footnotes or end notes!

Based on the text by Burkholder, Rankin, and Johnson:
Analyze the emergence of “populism” in (modern) Latin America in the early twentieth century. For this analysis, include examples that reflect on the participation of (European) immigrants, the working classes (workers), and the cases of early populism in Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile.
Note that the economic and political experiences, and urbanization (i.e., movement of large numbers of people into cities) were not the same from country to country. Thus, it is not possible to assume generalizations!
