Since Latin American Civilization is a Global Learning (GL) core class, a required part of the course includes a co-curricular activity. Thus, it means that students should engage in a meaningful activity that involves interacting with the course beyond the class materials with the community at large. There are some limitations in the context of an outside activity at the present time (Covid-19). You may fulfill the requirement in one of the following ways, watch documentary (either on Brazil or Cuba, from series “Black in Latin America” by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.:
Write a three-page, double-spaced, short essay (maximum 650 words).
Do not ignore that a thesis statement is also important; it makes an argument and provides direction (road map).
Topic: Based on documentary, analyze the African presence in the Caribbean and Latin America (cases of Brazil and Cuba) by focusing on the contemporary experiences of African culture and traditions in at least one country.
Select one country, Brazil or Cuba. In your analysis, explain if your experience in Latin American Civilization course influenced the way you interacted with the documentary.
For citations, use a simple notation within the narrative. For Brazil follow this short format, Documentary by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., “Brazil, a Racial Paradise,?” Black in Latin America.
If you decide to focus on Cuba, then Documentary by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., “Cuba: The Next Revolution,” Black in Latin America.
