Essay 1 Acting and Performance:~750 words-1,000 words
Research+ Formal Analysis
Include 2-3 original research articles (at least 1 academic, 1 popular press). If your example is contemporary, and there is no academic work, it is OK to not use an academic source. Use your sources to support your argument, not to summarize or take up space.
Performance analysis (open, visual analysis + and research to support your thesis):
Pick a performance clip (~5 minutes max) from a film we have screened for class, or your choice outside of class. If it is from class, only briefly describe it; if it is outside of class, provide a link and also briefly describe the clip. DO NOT summarize the plot or performance.

Analyze how the elements of acting and performance contribute to the film’s formal result (entry point example: the Denzel Washington video example from the acting powerpoint), and what the overall performance and actor’s role contributes to the film’s meaning and cultural significance. That is, how does form serve content? Use specific examples from your knowledge of visual analysis and cultural theory.
*Use 1-2 outside reputable journalistic or academic sources (whether supplied in class or found on your own) to provide context and support your point re: the performance as significant to visual form and overall meaning of the film.
