1. Analyze and interpret Book III, chapter 11, on the arguments presented in favor of democracy and the limitations or qualifications that Aristotle attaches to these arguments. Give some thought too to the place of this chapter in the whole development of his argument about distributing political power in a form of government (or “regime” or “constitution”) in Book III, chapters 6-13.
2. Discuss the chief aspects of Aristotle’s characterization of democracy (in Book III, chapters 8, 9, and 11 and Book IV chapters 4 and 6) and consider the ways in which democracy thus understood does and does not adequately characterize the U.S.A.
3. Analyze Aristotle’s discussion of polity in Book IV, chapters 7-9 and 11, and consider
the ways in which the regime called polity does and does not adequately characterize the U.S.A.
4. Analyze and interpret Book V, chapters 6 and 7, on factions and revolutions in democracies and oligarchies; include some reflection on what practically useful knowledge this section of the book provides.
