An important goal of this course is to increase your awareness of public service career opportunities and help you think systematically about how your interests, skills, and abilities contribute to the public interest. This assignment will allow you to use what you have learned about public service to discuss the next steps in your public service career.
For this final paper, you will use the results from the Career Exploration Exercise you completed in Module 1. To complete this assignment you will need to conduct additional research and review the previously assigned chapters from the Krasna (2010) book. Your essay will address the following:
Identify and describe someone who has inspired you and how. Is there someone you have learned about in this course (from any of the assigned course materials) whose career follows a similar path to what you want to take? Is there someone who inspires you? There are a number of profiles in the Krasna (2010) and there were several assigned videos with interviews of people working in public service that may serve as inspiration. You may also discuss someone that you have learned about outside of the course, just make sure that you cite sources and include them in your reference list. Please refer to the “APA Style Guidance” area of Blackboard for more information about how to do this.
Summarize the results of your Career Exploration Exercise. Based on the results,
Briefly describe what you learned (or what was confirmed) about your motivations, the results of the Holland categories, your values, and skills.
3. Identify 2-3 specific jobs that interest you – conduct research using resources such as ICMA (https://icma.org/job-postsLinks to an external site.) or Public Service Careers (http://www.publicservicecareers.org/)
Describe the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for each job
Describe the salary and job outlook for each job – research using the Occupational Outlook Handbook from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics https://www.bls.gov/ooh/
Explain whether and how each job contributes to the public interest.
4. Explain what you need to do next to advance your career. Be specific and include a discussion of the issues that Krasna (2010) discusses in Chapters 1 and 11.
You may not reuse text from other assignments that you have completed for this course. However, you may discuss the ideas or what you learned. DO NOT SUBMIT THE RESPONSES TO THE CAREER EXPLORATION EXERCISES.
This assignment should be approximately 1,500 words. You should use APA style for your in-text citations and include a reference list also formatted in APA style.
