An essential skill for health and human services professionals is understanding how each of the entities within health and human services, and individuals within the entities, work together in order to support positive patient outcomes. These professionals need to understand the roles and responsibilities of those individuals and entities in order to guide a patient to receive the most appropriate care.
This task challenges you to choose either a role or entity within health and human services. You will apply the responsibilities of that role or entity to a patient needing care. Then you will go a step further and connect the concepts of cultural competence in the scenario to the roles and responsibilities of the selected role or entity.
Note: All references used should be current, within the last five years.
Ms. Roberts is a homeless 33-year-old African American mother of three children between the ages of 6 and 10. She was diagnosed with HIV three months ago. Her previous HIV test was eight years ago, and she did not return for the results. Ms. Roberts has a 10-year history of intravenous drug abuse. She stated that her last use of drugs was 18 hours ago. Ms. Roberts dropped out of high school during the 11th grade, and she has a history of mental illness. Ms. Roberts has had several friends and family members die of AIDS. She receives care at an urban community clinic where all her healthcare providers are of a different ethnic and cultural background. She is very cautious about starting any drug therapy for HIV due to stories of other African Americans being used in an experimental way without their consent. She has not expressed these concerns to her provider.

B.  Based on the given scenario, identify one role within health and human services that would be able to assist Ms. Roberts with one of her potential needs. The selected role may be found within one of the entities or organizations selected from part A.
1.  Describe in detail three specific activities or actions that your identified role should perform in order to assist Ms. Roberts.
2.  Explain how each activity would support Ms. Roberts’s present and future health needs.
C.  Based on the given scenario, explain how the role, entity, or organization that was identified in part A or part B would be able to improve cultural competence when working with patients similar to Ms. Roberts by doing the following:
1.  Identify two examples from the scenario in which a lack of cultural competence may hinder Ms. Roberts’s treatment.
2.  Describe a potential plan of action for each example.
3.  Explain how each plan of action would address any lack of cultural competence.
D.  Acknowledge sources, using in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.
E.  Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.
