Parenthetical Citations and Video References
This is the first assignment that asks for quotes with Parenthetical Citations. How to do parenthetical citations is given in generalized form at the bottom of this assignment. Then, there is a link to a “wiki page” (information page) with more detailed information about how to do parenthetical citations.
The “bottom line” is that parenthetical citations are very simple and sparing in format – more information is not better in this case
Note:
The grading of this assignment will provide feedback about errors in citation format without any penalty. If you are completely missing a quote or a citation in this assignment, you will lose points – only wrong format is forgiven.
But, in future assignments, you must follow the format for parenthetical citations as provided in this course, or you will lose points.
Also, Very Important:
References to videos do not use the parenthetical citation format, in this course. Use no parentheses. Video references are fully integrated into the text of your answers. You only have to mention the title of the video, briefly describe the pertinent scene and give the timing point of the beginning of the scene. See prompt #4, below.
While the two articles you’ve read take opposing views on music, are there any types of music, from your own experience, that would be considered inappropriate by both authors? (Asked another way: Is there any type of music that would be considered inappropriate to Muslims who generally support music, which would provide “common ground” with those who prohibit music?)
Please remember to include specific examples of the types of music these two might agree are inappropriate.
Support your answer by integrating (within your paragraph) two short quotes (one or two sentences), one from each article, followed by a parenthetical citation. See below for citation instructions. This question will help us make a connection between the authors of the two articles – even though they take opposing views.
The author of A Topic of Dispute in Islam: Music provides several examples to defend his view that music is a “useless” activity. Which example made the most sense to you (even if you don’t agree with it)?
First, Quote the specific part of the passage (please not a whole paragraph) that you will work with, followed by its parenthetical citation, Then explain why you can understand the author’s point whether you agree with it or not. This question will help us connect with this author even though most readers of Western culture will have difficulty understanding/agreeing with his position.
The author(s) of Music & Singing builds their argument with both scripture from the Qur’an and every day experiences and thought. Which part of the argument was the weakest to you?
Quote the specific part of the passage (please not a whole paragraph) that you will work with, followed by its parenthetical citation, then explain why this point was not convincing, but also, how your personal background might be affecting your point of view.
Remember: the following questions are to be applied to Only the Specific Segments of the documentaries listed in the text of the Learning Page. If you reference timings in incorrect segments, you will lose several points.
What is your reaction to the documentary – Pop Goes Islam? Describe something you found most interesting in the documentary or anything that contributed to your understanding of the role of music in Islamic culture. Are there any connections you can make between this documentary and what you read in the two articles?
You Must include at least two (2) descriptive references to two different scenes from the documentary (covering two different topics), which are the basis for your view and give timing points to those scenes. These references should be written like this: In the documentary, “Pop Goes Islam,” at 35:12, we see a newsroom style TV set with the imam on the left, the moderator center, and Haiba on the right… Do not use parentheses for video references.
What was the most interesting thing you saw or heard in the Sufi section of the documentary Heaven: How Five Religions See It, as it relates to the Whirling Dervish or the role of music in Islamic culture?
How might this be considered a “third” view of music in Islam?

I was really moved by the scene in “Heaven: As Five Religions See It,” at xx:xx, where…[description of scene]. Citation Information for class.
(Please follow this form only. Do not use any other format, for now.)
You Must cite your sources for all Factual information (except what comes from reading course information/learning pages), whether in quotes or not.
Article 1
The first article lists an author, so you would use his last name as the citation: (Sabri).
Using the author’s last name is always the first choice.
If this were a print source with multiple pages or a website with the article split into different pages, add the page number after the author’s last name: (Sabri 3). In this case it is a single web page that you scroll through, therefore, no page number exists, so just use the author’s name.
Article 2
The second article does not include an author’s name. Use the title of the article in quote marks: (“Music and Singing”). The quote marks indicate that this is an article/page within a larger website that covers a variety of topics. This is similar to citing a chapter within a book, an article within a magazine, or an entry in an online encyclopedia.
This web article, also, has no pages (it is just one long web page), but, if it were a PDF with pages, you would add a space and a page number that is outside the quotes, like (“Music and Singing” 4). Again, this article, though, has no pages.
Course Information/Learning Pages
If you choose to directly quote information from one of the information/learning pages from this course, or any course’s information pages, then you must cite it as a source. Please use the same citation format as for “Article 2.” This means that you will cite the Title of the the information page, for example (“Reading – Islam and Music”).
Do Not cite the Instructor as a source, since they are usually not the original researcher or “owner” of the information. The Instructor has copyright over their information page content, because of how they presented the information, but the information is rarely from their own original research.
Important Details
Remember, citing an information/learning page is Only if you Quote it Directly. If you are simply referring to information you have learned in class through the course pages, you do not have to add a citation.
Punctuation
Notice the punctuation format in the example below. There is just one period at the very end.
The words taken from the source are surrounded in quote marks.
