first Allport
The article is a classic in the study of prejudice and discrimination. It was a good attempt at trying to explain and understand why we are a species that categorizes, generalizes and simplifies our thoughts regarding other people. It is a very short article (4 pages), it is the final chapter in a book that Gordon Allport wrote regarding “The Nature of Predjudice”. In the past I have found that this article stimulates a great deal of healthy debate.

assignment 1
1. start a discussion thread post
2. Discuss the six approaches to prejudice. Please include in your answer the Historical, Sociocultural, Situational, Psychodynamic, Phenomenological, and the Earned Reputation emphases.
3. How does urban insecurity play a part in prejudice? What is the frustration theory? Compare these two.
next assignment is about Marx
choose to discuss “the communist manifesto” and “Asceticism and the spirit of Capitalism” together (even though they are due different weeks – Marx this week and Weber next) because they are zeitgeist articles related to the greatest sociopolitical debate of this century. This debate is basically which social system is better: Communism or Capitalism. The communist manifesto and its descriptions of the bourgeois and proletarians was the major work that inspired the communist revolution in Russia and the later Communist “revolutions” of Eastern Europe, Asia, and Cuba.
The second article points to the capitalism as a social system building from the Protestant ideas (especially Calvinism). I cannot think of a more dramatic way to emphasize the virtues of a social system (capitalism) by discussing its foundation in religion.
Well, is Capitalism a devil to be fought (as discussed in the Communist Manifesto) or “heavenly sent” as implied in the “Asceticism and the spirit of Capitalism” article….
YOU DECIDE….
These works are easier reads than the others (I believe) if not and you send me comments I will conjure up some websites to assist (if they are out there)
