General Information
Assignments in this course are intended to strengthen your skills in written communication. Effective communication skills, including scholarly writing, is an element of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (AACN) Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing:
“Assume a leadership role in effectively implementing patient safety and quality improvement initiatives within the context of the interprofessional team using effective communication (scholarly writing, speaking, and group interaction)” (AACN, 2011, p.12).
Additionally, the American Organization of Nurse Leader’s (AONL) Nurse Executive Competencies include having the ability to “demonstrate written and oral presentation skills” (AONL, 2015, p.5) as a component of core competencies representing the science of managing the business.
All written assignments submitted by students, including both discussion postings and written papers, should provide evidence of growth in both written communication and scholarly writing over the course of the semester.
General Guidelines
To facilitate your success, please follow these general guidelines:
Discussion Postings
Initial post: Please restate the question you are answering to guide the discussion thread.
All postings (initial and response): Should be a minimum of three paragraphs in length, (approximately 350-500 words), enough content to convey understanding of key concepts.
The first paragraph should be 2-3 sentences in length.
Middle paragraph(s) – should be 5-20 sentences and represent the substance of what you are conveying to the reader. Content should be supported by appropriate citations to assure you have gone beyond opinion.
The final paragraph should be 3-6 sentences and not contain new information but summarize what you have said.
Formatting: For all discussions, I recommend that you do all initial writing in Word or another document that can be saved. This provides you with a back-up in case there are any issues with your posting and/or Canvas glitches (rare but occur). Then copy and paste the content from that document into the discussion text box. I do understand that there are formatting issues with APA once the document is copied and pasted. Do your best to correct the formatting.
Use of Quotations: The use of quotations in discussions and written assignments is strictly limited for use in citing definitions ( See Section 8.25 of APA Manual:  Principles of Direct Quotation – p. 270)
Scoring Rubric: A detailed grading rubric is provided to guide your responses.
Written Papers
All written papers are to follow the APA 7th (2020) for structure and content (please note, not all elements are components of course assignments).
Please refer to paper instructions and grading rubric for further details.
